Just when you think you’ve heard it all, there’s Rush Limbaugh.
For the past few days, Republicans have been scrambling to react to explosive allegations of sexual misconduct against Alabama’s Roy Moore, the conservative darling who was supposed to be pivotal in the GOP’s efforts to retain the majority in the Senate.
On Monday, the fifth accuser again Roy Moore came out. Beverly Young Nelson said that Moore, who was the Etowah County district attorney at the time, sexually assaulted her in a diner parking lot. The incident allegedly happened in 1977, when Beverly was only 16 years old.
Nelson’s allegations followed those in a recent bombshell Washington Post report in which four woman accused Moore of sexual misconduct, including one who accused Moore of inappropriately touching her when she was 14 and he was 32.
Roy Moore has completely denied the allegations, calling them “completely false.”
Prominent Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have asked Roy Moore to drop out of the race. Some have even went as far as to suggest that the Senate should expel Moore if he wins the election.
However, for every Republican asking for Roy Moore to step aside and face his accusers, you are bound to find three (if not more) conservatives who are more than eager to defend the judge from Alabama.
But as tensions and accusations mount, even the most hardcore Republicans are finding it difficult to keep supporting Moore.
Just take a look at what lengths far-right spin machine Rush Limbaugh is going to just to try to make Republicans save face in the midst of these disturbing allegations.
“Did you know that before 1992, when a lot of this was going on, that Judge Moore was a Democrat?” Limbaugh said on his radio show. “Nobody said a word. When he supposedly was attracted to inappropriately-aged girls — he was a Democrat.”
Now, that’s a Hail-Mary excuse if I’ve ever seen one. However, even with his “outside the box” thinking, even hardcore Rush Limbaugh had to face the music.
“No matter what the real stories are here, and no matter what the evidence is, these guys, these people on the Republican side, are making it clear they are going to prevent this guy from ever being seated in the United States Senate,” Limbaugh said.
And rightfully so. We already have a man-child in the White House – what would the world think if we had an accused pervert in our Senate too?
Recently, times have been tough for Republicans. Just a few days ago, they were absolutely destroyed as Democrats won big time elections and solidified some purple states -mainly Virginia – as blue.
With the 2018 elections looming, the GOP is right to be frightened.
