Shep Smith finally broke his silence on the Hannity-Cohen situation by doing the right thing, calling out Hannity.
News broke on Monday that Fox News Host Sean Hannity was a client of Trump connected lawyer Michael Cohen.
During court proceedings, Cohen announced that Hannity was the mysterious “third client” who he was currently employed by. The other two being President Trump and Republican donor Elliott Broidy.
The news came as a shock to many members of the press, because of Hannity’s failure to disclose the relationship despite frequently weighing in on the investigation into Cohen as well as other members of the Trump legal team.
The story was largely ignored by Fox News until host Shepard Smith called it out during his segment of “Shepard Smith Reporting.”
“Of course, for us, the elephant in the room is that Sean Hannity is said, according to court documents, to have been a third client of Michael Cohen,” Smith informed his audience.
“Since it’s now part of the story we’ll report on it when we know the rest of it. A lot of people here know his number so we’ll get on that in just a second,” he said.
This wasn’t the first time that Smith broke from Fox party line. After the news broke that Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and the campaign manager Paul Manafort took a meeting with a woman affiliated with the Kremlin, Smith intensely covered the issue calling the meeting an “absurd” decision.
Moreover, has taken the White House to task for the preponderance of lies that stem from the administration. “Why all these lies?” he asked fellow anchor Chris Wallace. “Why is it lie after lie after lie?”
Hannity has not responded to Smith’s comments but has been defiant in maintaining that he did nothing wrong in his relationship with Cohen.
“Michael Cohen has never represented me in any matter,” Hannity said after the news broke. “ I never retained him, received an invoice, or paid legal fees. I have occasionally had brief discussions with him about legal questions about which I wanted his input and perspective.”
Cohen has not publically made comment on the relationship since his statement in court.
Hannity remains a close ally of the President. Frequently, Trump has tweeted out calls to tune into particular broadcasts of Hannity’s show. Moreover, Trump reportedly calls Hannity after his show when he feels like he did an especially good job of addressing issues of importance to him.
On March 31st, it was reported that the two of them had dinner together at Mar-a-Lago.
